Gijs Papavoine

Gijs Papavoine, an established name in the design world, born and bred in ’s-Hertogenbosch, graduated from the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven.

Sculpting

“My designs always stem from a powerful basic form and are characterised by simplicity. I work on the basis of an original idea; that is the ideal towards which I then strive in the execution. My chairs in particular are very formalistic, designing a chair is almost like sculpting. “

Not in the office

“I get my inspiration when I’m looking round companies and talking to people, not ‘in the office’. I do different things depending on the company or the application; I want to add something new to what’s already there with my designs, particularly to the perception. In keeping with the organisation for which I’m designing at that moment.”

Vandersluis

“I’ve known Vandersluis for a very long time. It’s a real ‘no-nonsense’ company that is characterised by Dutch sober-mindedness, a company that dares to make choices; they mainly do what they are really good at. Vandersluis have a lot of craftsmanship and technical knowledge to offer, and they also come up with technical solutions which are very strong in design terms too. A very good thing about Vandersluis is that their products are executed in such a way that the chairs and tables retain the same quality throughout the years, and you don’t see that very often.”
